Walking

Aside from being the most environmentally sustainable form of transport, walking is also one of the simplest forms of exercise and can offer several health benefits.

Man walking in nature

Did you know that:

  • a brisk walk burns the same amount of calories as a run over the same distance
  • walking can cut your risk of developing heart disease by up to 50% and reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer
  • walking boosts your immune system for 24 hours

NHS Walk for Life

There’s an extensive Public Rights of Way network around Forster Park which gives you the chance to relax and take in the local nature and beauty of the surrounding area.

If you want to meet new people through regular exercise, you can join one of the Stevenage Health Walks. See the Stevenage Borough Council website link below for more details.

Cycling

Getting started

Don’t worry about getting the latest carbon fibre bike: if you haven’t cycled for a while, why not hire one to get you back on the saddle?

Many employers offer a Cycle to Work scheme, so if you do want to get one, this is a tax-free way of getting back on a bike.

To help make it easy for you, Bellway and Miller Homes have provided you with cycle parking at your new home, to ensure that your bikes stay safe, dry and can be accessed when you need them.

gaining confidence

If it’s been a while since you last took to two wheels or you’ve never been on a bike at all, you can contact Hertfordshire County Council about cycle training.

If you just want to get some practice in, then there are lots of off-road cycle routes within Stevenage - just click on the layers in Google Maps to see the cycling routes.

Cycling for fun

There are plenty of local cycling clubs, whether you’re looking for a relaxed group with stops at cafes, or a more competitive club.

Take a look at the Cycling UK website for details of events, clubs and advice.

Maintaining your bike

There are plenty of free resources out there to help you maintain your bike. Why not try the Park Tool repair help and education website:

Bicycle Service Worker at the Workshop

If you don't fancy trying it yourself though, just take it along to a local bike shop, the cycling hub, or contact Dr Bike and they'll be able to carry out regular servicing as well as emergency maintenance.

Cycling for life

Cycling is not only a great way of getting around for increasing numbers of people, but it is also a way of life. It's easy to catch the bug and getting out with the whole family is a great way to help keep everyone healthy.

There are different bikes and accessories to suit everyone: trailers that you can tow young children in; front and rear child seats; tag-alongs for the kids; and tricycles and four-wheeled, two-seater bikes for those with mobility needs.

Cargo bikes are great for carrying both children and shopping, but if you prefer to travel a little lighter, get a basket or a rack fitted with a couple of pannier bags; you will find these roomy enough for that picnic, some shopping or even a weekend getaway!

By car

If you need to get somewhere that's not accessible by other modes, then there are still ways that you can try and use the car a little more sustainably.

The best way to save fuel and reduce congestion when driving is to maximise the number of people in the car, whilst switching to electric can help to reduce carbon emissions, particularly if your energy comes from a renewable source.

Car sharing

There are many benefits to sharing your car for work or leisure purposes, including:

- Reducing carbon emissions

- Enjoying the social aspects of travelling

- Improving your work/life balance

- Stress free travel

Electric vehicles

There's no need for range anxiety: modern electric vehicles can travel a couple of hundred miles until you need to recharge them, so are great for most regular journeys.

We’ve provided you with an EV charger in your new home, but if you need to ‘fill up‘ whilst you’re out, use Zap Map to find charging stations across the country.
